Chadar Trek

The famous Chadar trekking on the frozen Zanskar River in the dead of winter is the most famous touristic activities in winter. Chadar, means Frozen River. The best period for this trek is from the mid of January till the end of the February. The temperature goes down to negative 25 degree to 30 degree Celsius.
It is always better to have a cold weather while on this trek, so that the ice remain intact and doesn’t break down.
Short Itinerary  
Day 1. 16th jan : Leh arrival. Full day rest for acclimatisation.
Day 2.
17th jan : Also rest for proper acclimatisation.
Day 3. 18th jan  : Leh-Tilatdo via chilling and Trek to Shingra.
Day 4. 19th jan :-Trek Shingra to Tip yokma : 6 hrs.
Day 5. 20th jan :-Trek Tip Yokma to Nyerak Pullu. 6 hrs.
Day 6. 21st jan :Nyerak Pullu to Tip Yokma
Day 7. 22nd jan : Trek  back to Shingra.
Day 8.
23rd  jan : Trek back to Tilat do and drive back to Leh.
Day 9. 24th Jan & 25th feb  : Free day at Leh. 
Day 10. 26th Jan Departure

Detailed Itinerary 
Day 1. 16th jan : Leh arrival. Full day rest for acclimatisation.
Arrival at leh city. Complete Rest in Leh for acclimatization and Evening hang around main market and Shanti Stupa

Day 2. 17th jan : Also rest for proper acclimatisation.
Visit to various monasteries like Shey , Thiksey  Hemis monasteries, overnight in Hotel.
Day 3. 18th jan  : Leh-Tilatdo via chilling and Trek to Shingra.
After a early Breakfast Drive to Tilatdo. The trek Guide  from Travel Green  give a briefing about the day, and give tips on how to walk on the Chadar.  After a short briefing we will start walk to Shingra- it’s around 7 to 8 kms and it will take us about 4hrs.      While doing the chadar trek we will be walking on the frozen river all the time. If the weather is good and the ice is not broken on the way then we don’t have to cross the river at all. Since we are walking on the ice or frozen river it will be slippery some times and there will be snows on the ice also. Hot lunch will be served at around 1 o’clock.

Day 4. 19th jan :-Trek Shingra to Tip yokma : 6 hrs.
Breakfast will be served at 8 o’clock . After Brekfast will start the trek , Today’s walk through the deep ravines of the Zanskar is stunning. The sublime walls of the mountains on either sides of the river keep the sunlight away from the Chadar for most part of the day.
Hot lunch will be served at around 1 o’clock.
Shingra to Tip Yokma- it’s about 11-12 km and will take about 6 hrs. The way and the walking conditions should be same as the previous day.

Day 5. 20th jan :-Trek Tip Yokma to Nyerak Pullu. 6 hrs.
 Tip Yokma – Nyarak Pulu again about-12 km. And will take some 6 hrs. Today is the day when you can see Big frozen waterfall. Just Before Nyerak Water Fall  you will reach  a point where Juniper trees are covered with prayer flags. The porters give you a twig of this tree tied with a piece of prayer flag as a badge of good-luck and good-health. Trekking condition will be same as earlier. Hot lunch will be served approx 1 o’clock

Day 6. 21st jan :Nyerak Pullu to Tip Yokma
Today you start the return journey and go back to the Tip yokma/ Tibb cave.

Day 7.  22nd jan : Trek  back to Shingra.
Day 8. 23rd  jan : Trek back to Tilat do and drive back to Leh.
Day 9. 24th Jan & 1st feb  : Free day at Leh.  
Please note that it is safer to keep a day or two in buffer since the weather and the ever changing terrain introduces a certain amount of uncertainty in our itinerary.
Day 10. 25-26th Jan Departure


THINGS TO CARRY ON YOUR OWN
Backpack (55 - 65 L) with sturdy straps and supporting frame.(optional)/ Duffel Bag
Daypack (20 L) is required to carry your water bottle, Pack lunch , Camera, your & Jacket  etc.
Trekking shoes
Gum boots (Buy from Leh Only)
few pair of track pants Or cotton pants,
Full sleeve sweaters and fleece jacket & Full sleeve cotton tees with collar.
A full sleeve thick jacket.
Few set of undergarments, socks (6 pair ), warm caps, gloves and thermals
Sun glasses with good UV protection (your team should have 1 extra sun glass also)
Light towel (should be thin, quick drying kind).
Chapstick or lip balm. (2 nos.)
Cold cream and sun screen lotion (SPF 40+).
A very good Water bottles (1 L).
Personal toilet kit (minimal) and toilet paper.
LED Torch with extra set of cells (head lamps preferable).
Small repair kit consisting of safety pins, needle, thread and string (mandatory).

Cancellations prior to 30 days from the start of the trek -- 95 refund.
Cancellation between 30 days and 20 days to the start of the trek -- 50% refund. (of full amount )
Cancellation less than 20 days to the start of the trek -- no refund.
